LABURDA, JIRI - 1931

LABURDA, JIRIJiri (pron. YIH-zhee) Laburda, born April 3, 1931, composer from the Czech Republic, has acquired his love for music from his parents and received elementary musical training in his native town of Sobeslav. His attitude to music in general, and composition, in particular, was also shaped by the Czech composers Karel Haba, Zdenek Hula and the musicologist, Eduard Herzog.

Between 1952 and 1955, Laburda studied at the Pedagogical Faculty of Prague?s Charles University and later on at the Prague Teacher Training College (1957-1960). In 1970, he received the title of Doctor of Philosophy; his doctoral thesis was entitled The Symphonies of D. D. Schostakovitch. His treatise, Didactic Problems of Modern Textbooks of Harmony, completed in 1973, is now the basis of his university textbook, Diatonic Harmony.

Jiri Laburda taught at various teacher-training colleges and institutions in Czech towns until he joined the staff of the Pedagogical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. He is presently on the faculty at the Conservatory of Music in Prague.

In his early days as a composer, Jiri Laburda devoted himself mostly to choral compositions which still assume a pride of place among his works. In composition, he draws on traditional means of expression. Stylistically, he ties on to neo-classicism in particular. As far as modern techniques of composition are concerned, it is small aleatoric and dodecaphony which are closest to his temperament.

Over the years, Laburda has composed an impressive number of works out of which more than 150 compositions have appeared in print. Laburda?s compositions are easily understandable and are very well received by the broadest sections of music lovers. He has always maintained lively contacts with musicians and amateur choirs for which he composed very comprehensible works. To date, he has produced many compositions for children, notably minor works which children can easily play or sing. Among his technically demanding compositions are the virtuoso 1st and 2nd Partita for Solo Violin, numerous Sonatas (8 for piano, 4 for organ, 2 for trombone, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, tuba, accordion), Concertos (piano, 2 for cello, trumpet, trombone, organ, bassoon, accordion), Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, 9 Masses, Cantatas, Symphony, etc.

That Jiri Laburda?s compositions are generally acclaimed and successful is corroborated by the countless prizes and distinctions which have been awarded thus far at domestic and international musical competitions. As far as domestic events go, in the jubilee competition sponsored by Czecho-slovak Radio Prague, he won the prize for his Piano Concerto, while carrying away several prizes from the nationwide choral competition at Jihlava. At international music festivals and similar events, he was awarded the Oscar Espla; prize for his Missa Glagolitica (1966); he won the Otto Sprekelsen prize in the city of Hanover, Germany, for his cantata, Metamorphoses (1968); in 1974, his Prelude for Solo Accordion received the SACEM-UPAC prize in Paris. Zeleny Majeran (Green Marjoram )for Mixed Choir received the first prize and also the Premio Cita; di Trento in 1974. Prizes in international competitions were received also in 1987, 1994 and 1996.   Works by Jirí Laburda  published in Alliance Publications   SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE

LUKAS, DAVID - 1981

LUKAS, DAVIDDavid Lukas (pron. LOO-kahsh) was born January 9, 1981, in Hlinsko, a small town in Eastern Bohemia of the Czech Republic, where at the age of 5, he began playing the violin. His family moved to nearby Vysoke Myto where, at the age of 14, he studied music harmony and composition and began composing music. Recognized as a child prodigy in his hometown, this budding musician-composer, studied both piano and violin in Vysoke Myto and nearby Pardubice. Since February 2000, David is continuing his formal musical training in conducting at the Conservatory of Music in Prague under Professors Farkac and Nemcova while studying composition privately.

David has a flair for musical color and dynamics. His compositions for strings answer a need for quality contemporary music suitable for young music ensembles where musicianship can be fostered and developed.

Three Miniatures for String Orchestra is a collection of pieces which will provide young players with contemporary liturature from a young composer. Romance in G-major, his first composition, was composed at the age of 16 in 1997. Minuetto and Black Eyes are compositions from 1999. Two Miniatures for String Orchestra contains Fantasia on the Svaty Vaclave chant and Roll Over, Roll (Koulelo se, koulelo) for string orchestra.

He has already delved into larger compositions, eg. Symphony in A-flat major for large orchestra, a small Ballet for strings and percussion instruments, and a Requiem for symphonic orchestra, choir and two soloists

LUKAS, ZDENEK - 1928-2007

LUKAS, ZDENEKZdenek Lukas (pronounced ZDEN-yek LOO-kahsh) ranks among the outstanding Czech composers of this century. He was born August 21, 1928 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He died in Prague July 13, 2007. After graduating from the Theater Institute in Prague, Lukas was an elementary teacher for five years. From 1953-1964, he was employed by the Czechoslovak Radio Studio in Plzen as an editor and literary manager where, in 1954, he founded and directed the mixed choir, Ceska Pisen (Czech Song), whose overall artistic standards he raised immeasurably during the course of its first 20 years. The choir achieved international acclaim under his direction, a tradition which it continues to this day.

Zdenek Lukas's music, as well as his personal fate, is a witness to the way in which natural gifted talent is confronted with a licentious society. Lukas's heirloom was the traditional musicianship of a teacher's family He said, "We made music all the time at home." He himself started as a teacher and none of his knowledge of composing was gained from the official establishment.

Lukas began composing during high school while studying music theory under Antonin Madr. During the time he lived in Plzen, Lukas focused on arranging folk songs for his choir, and gradually began to compose original works. Immersed in the ambience of folk music from his native region during his youth, Lukas developed a unique compositional flavor having a sense of energy which characterises his work. Basically self-taught as a composer, Lukas reflects the influence of folk intonations and impulses in his compositions. His musical development went through a number of stages the romantic beginnings of folksong arrangements, the writing of music for radio plays, then a period of testing experimental techniques in electronic music and finally a synthesis, a maturity reflecting a life full of musical spontaneity, yet with discipline.

Meeting the composer Miloslav Kabelac in 1962 provided an important impetus for Lukas to develop and continue to establish his own reputation as a composer. For eight years, Lukas worked with Kabelac to complete his musical training through tutorials. The support of this relationship of teaching and support was invaluable to him. Lukas has devoted his life entirely to composition since 1964 with the exception of two interruptions, a temporary teaching position at the Prague Conservatory of Music and later a four-year directorship of a women's chamber choir for the Czechoslovak State Ensemble of Songs and Dances.

After the tragic year of 1968, Lukas turned to a sort of intuitive aloneness and directed his creative energy to developing a personal melodic and rhythmic style, the sources of which are comparable to the inspirational background of Carl Orff--the Czech language, Czech folklore and pre-classical music. Upon listening, one can always detect the inner spark of Lukas after experiencing the first few moments of his music. His musical style comes across vividly and poignantly.

Lukas's personally expressive style of musical composition is a synthesis of traditional means of expression and contemporary techniques characterized by modal harmonic and melodic thinking, the simultaneous use of various tricky metric combinations on several planes and a feeling for tonal color. A rich melodic invention characterises his music. He seeks the center of mass for his compositions in melody. Typically, he employs a scale with regular alternation of major and minor seconds so that the octave has one extra tone, eg. C-D-Eb-F-Gb-Ab-A-B-C. A rich feeling for the rhythm and meter based upon his intimate knowledge of folksongs and dances is evident in his craft. His mastery of form, which often contains rondo elements, reveals the composer's extraordinary ability to reveal the latent potential for compositional stylizations.

Zdenek Lukas is a prolific composer, numbering more than 270 compositions, which include 6 symphonies, many instrumental concertantes, several operas, chamber music and a vast treasury of choral and vocal compositions. Long ago choirs discovered the treasury of his vocal music. However, he is revered by instrumentalists as a piece of mountain crystal whose brightness is hidden under an inconspicuous exterior.

Lukas's works are frequently performed at the various major festivals in the Czech Republic today and are attracting considerable attention abroad. His international prize-winning compositions include:

Parabolae Salomonis- choral cycle, (E. Bloch Prize in the USA-international competition) Versos d-mor i de comiat - cantata (international competition in Barcelona) 5th Symphony (the Premio Citta di Trieste competition) What I Can Draw,(OIRT radio competition in Moscow) Omittamus studia, The Spring is Coming, Dragouni (Calvary Officers), etc. (various Czechoslovak national competitions)
