MARIAN SYMPHONY by Joel Blahník is a 4-movement work which is a free-rendering of motives from three traditional Marian hymns: “Salve Mater,” “Immaculate Mary” and “Hail, Holy Queen.” After a quick opening statement, Movement 2 features a Saxophone Quartet with optional Vocal Soloist. Movement 3 dwells upon the concept of mystery with mute Percussion and glissando Trombones. Movement 4 presents two hymns which have the option of Woodwind Choir on a verse, by Brass Choir or just full tutti.  For each hymn, a text of three verses is provided for the band or an augmenting Choir/audience to sing in unison and uses four Percussion parts and Timpani. Richly scored, this work is a great expression of beauty! Concert Band.
