THE HODAG! by Trevor Tripp is a programmatic work sure to delight the imaginations of young players using half, quarter and 8th notes until the chase scene which has to have some 16ths in it! “The Hodag!” is based on the story of a brave lumberjack, a cow about to become hamburger, and a mythological Northwoods monster. The hero lumberjack goes out for a stroll to cut down trees. An evil creature, the Hodag, creeps near the cow enjoying its grass which upon seeing the creature, cries out in terror! Chasing the cow, the Hodag is cut down by the lumberjack’s axe. Lots of percussion is used for effect. Vocal calls by the band erupt at the appropriate moments with “Timber” and “Moo!” Based on the book, Gene Shepard’s Wisconsin Hodag by William Horner, Badger House 2001. Concert Band. Score.
