THE BATTLE OF AUSTERLITZ by Evžen Zámečník (1939-2018) is a landmark composition of paramount significance. Based upon authentic signals and musical commands of the 3 fighting armies (Russia, France and Austria). Russia, France and Austria – these statements are set against one another by means of polytonality and other musical devices. The image of the horrors of war is offset by a musical prayer. The increasing dramatic tension and intensity of sound culminate with the tune of “Marseillaise” as a symbol of victory of Napoleon’s troops which eventually changes into a meditative commemoration of the innumerable victims.
